BCCN Lecture Series #3: China's authoritarian capitalism in a comparative perspective

This lecture is part of this spring term's BCCN Lecture Series: China in the Global Political Economy.

The sweeping rise of authoritarianism worldwide and how it interacts with capitalism has gained increasing attention. Authoritarian capitalism has become a salient mode of political economy in contexts as diverse as mature democracies, post-communist societies, and autocracies with emerging markets. This talk places China in a comparative perspective. It first lays out several major pathways leading to authoritarian capitalism since the 20th century. It then examines the path that China represents, where markets and capitalists were created after the establishment of an authoritarian regime, but without regime breakdown. The way in which the authoritarian regime and capitalist system emerged affects state-business collusion, the degrees of state autonomy and capture, as well as the sustainability of authoritarian capitalism.
